Diu - A Quiet alternative to Goa Jan 06, 2012
If you are looking for a sea break in India and decide to eschew the mass tourism of Goa and now Kerala, Diu could be for you.
Similar to Goa Diu was a potuguese colony "liberated in 1961 but most similarities end there. Diu is a small island connected by a bridge to Gujarat.
The most charming feature fo Diu is that tourists are few in number and mostly are Indians from the state of Gujarat. If you are a non-indian you will have many friendly encounters with Indian people here.
Due to the idiosyncracies of Indian law, alcohol is legally available in Diu but illegal once to step off the bridge and back into Gujarat. One consequence of this is that you will meet many Gujaratis in Diu who have come for some time by the sea and avail of the option to have a drink. Moreover beer is significantly cheaper than elsewhere in India at approx 50 rupees for the standard 650ml.
The beaches are practically empty in Diu and it is easy to navigate the island by scooter. The sea feels several degrees cooler than Goa or Kerala but is still pleasant for bathing.
