Bike and Ferry Tour to Ditzum Jul 06, 2017
Ditzum is a historical fishermen’s village on the left bank of the Ems. It is a popular day trip destination among tourists and local people in and around Emden and Leer as well as the nearby Netherlands.

From Emden, it is a pleasant afternoon trip which is best done in a combination of bike and ferry. The Ditzum ferry departs from Petkum, a village on the Ems shore which is now part of the city. The distance from central Emden is about 10-12 kilometres, depending whether you follow the main road (bike trail all the way, easy peasy) or do the little detour via Borssum along the outward side of the dyke. I recommend at least one way along the waterside for the views and the air, best in the direction which has the wind in your back. This is a distance that can be coped with even by unsporty fatties like me, or families with younger children. The ferry ride makes an enjoyable change. This trip is (obviously) best in nice, sunny weather. I was lucky to be granted, after a rainy morning, a clearing sky around lunchtime when I set off and then a sunny afternoon.

Petkum has a tiny harbour with a few fishing boats, some sailboats, and the ferry landing. The ferry departs hourly, the ride across the Ems takes about 15 minutes. There is neither prebooking nor even a ticket booth; you simply pay cash when boarding the ferry. For an adult with a bike the fare is 3 € one way.

The ferry is a historical vessel, about 90 years old. Cuteness alert;-) It can transport pedestrians, bicycles, and up to 3 cars. When it’s full, it’s full. Pedestrians and cyclists don’t have to worry as they have preference, but by car you may be left behind.

Check the timetable in advance, in particular the departure times of the last ferry. The first and last departure, marked in red, only apply to summer season. There is also an intermission from the hourly rhythm around lunchtime.
