A great hostel, a lot of walking, Miradouros of Lisbon

My second day was an eventful one! In Lisbon, they have the Statue of Cristo Rei (Christ the King) which was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil... In order to reach it you have to leave Lisbon alltogether, take a ferry to Almada, and catch the 101 bus all the way up the hill to the statue... It is a breathtaking sight in itself but while there do marvel at the great view of Lisbon from across the river :) After the statue, me and my roommates deci…

"Come on guys, it's my birthday and it's time to eat…" I yelled full of courage. Because my birthday is in the heart of summer, I usually celebrate it abroad. Not out of extravagance but simply because most times I'm on vacation. We were touring the west and south coast of Europe. It was an interrail trip. With an open ticket you can get on and off every train, whenever and wherever you like. For the expenses while traveling, I'd taken on an extra job. But you know how it goes, in th…

FADO IS PORTUGAL
posted by:
Nov 14, 2006
Fado is Portugal’s folk music, the very 1st time I heard it was a song called 'Coisas Pequenas' by Madredeus. I am so angry at that time because my date stood me up, I was outside FNAC in Oporto in North Portugal and this song was playing, suddenly I feel relaxed and I listened closely. My anger went away, and I smiled. No other music have that kind of effect on me, so I guess that is good therapy for me! And from that day, I became a fan of Madredeus and Fado music. The music brough…

Lisbon Portugal Summer 2005: Lisbon Travel Photos
posted by:
Jul 17, 2005 - Jul 29, 2005
In the summer of 2005, I stayed in Almada for 2 weeks. We rented an apartment from the parents of a colleague of mine. Every day we took the ferry (15 min) to get us to Lisbon. Lisbon is a really nice city to visit. The Portuguese are really friendly people. There was a festival in Castelo S. Jorge with live music, a lot of food and of course beers. The castle is built on top of the hill and very close to the city's center. It is an extraordinary site and the view from the top is amazing. I…

Weekend trip to Lisbon.
posted by:
Dec 01, 2007
I often do crazy weekend trips and my trip to Lisbon was no exception.   On Friday November 30, I headed out to Newark on Northwest and then caught a TAP Air Portugal Airbus 330 to Lisbon.   I arrived into Lisbon at 5:30 am and within 30 minutes, I was on bus route 44 to downtown.  The cost was 1.35 Euro.  There is an airport express bus #91 but it does not start operating until 7:45 am.   I walked all around the area near Praca do Come…

Camping in the beast
posted by:
Jul 02, 2008 - Jul 13, 2008
We decided to stay in the area that night, find a camp ground etc and pull up in our beast. We drove for awhile following the signs leading us to a campsite. It waa fairly nice one, where we all had to pay appox 4€ each for the night and got our own little piece of land. Looked pretty rough - we would be sleeping in the car again by the looks of things. We checked out the grounds and their facillities... not being able to find the gamesroom!! The toilets even had the traditional drophole w…

Doug and I met up early for breakfast in Porto, and then climbed in the mini-bus for our ride back to Lisbon to catch our plane.  The drive back was pleasant and I enjoyed the scenery.  The area around Porto is at a higher elevation than Lisbon and has many more trees.  We also saw lots of olive groves and grape vineyards.  It was quite nice. We got back to the Tivoli Jardim in Lisbon and retrieved the bags we had stored there, jumped in Doug's rental car and headed out t…

4 Hours in Lisbon

4 Hours In Lisbon An eclectic blend of history and modernization, 3000-year-old Lisbon was revolutionarily reconstructed after being obliterated by an 18th-century earthquake. Nevertheless, Portugal's sprawling capital won't leave you lacking for things to do during your next stopover. VISIT Castelo de São Jorge, a crumbling fortress perched high atop the city, for panoramic views of the ubiquitous red rooftops and Rio Tejo. EAT delectable regional specialties like barbe…

I can remember it very well. We were watching Holland compete against Sweden in the quarter finals of the EC 2004 in Portugal. A penalty shootout would decide this game's winner. Almost everyone knows Holland's history with penalty shootouts.. bad, very bad. So when it came to these penaltys, my mother said: "Dan, we're going to Portugal if we win this game." The unthinkable happend, Holland won! My mother held her word and we booked a last minute flight including a ticket to Lisbon. It was pa…
