Felicidades! Felices Fiestas! Feliz Navidad! These are some of the greetings and goodbyes you may hear during the holiday season in Mexico City, the most populous Spanish-speaking city in the world. As you may already know, the population of Mexico is overwhelmingly Catholic (87.9% in the 2000 census). For those of you who celebrate Christmas on Christmas Day, you may find it interesting to learn that December 25th is not the biggest day of the holiday season for many families in ...

Mexico City - Day 1
posted by:
Jun 15, 2007 - Oct 11, 2007
My last day in Mexico City.  I had originally planned to fly out Tuesday afternoon but when I was trying to buy the flight in Puerto Escondido, either the airline site kept crashing or the flight I selected came up as unavailable.  I was getting frustrated and anxious to get to Peru so when I saw a night flight on Monday that left at midnight and landed at 5:30 in the morning with no 4 hour layover in Bogota, Colombia, I jumped on it, even though it cost more than the other but $150...

The CAPITAL

So we have arrived at the hotel and realised something was going on in Mexico city!!   After a careful look we realised it was Viva La Mexico, which is the celebration (once a year and we picked the weekend) of the independence of Mexico. It was madness but also amazing to be part of the crowd. The friday night was just partying and lots of music, but the saturday was spent getting ready when the president speaks to the Zocalo (city centre square) and shouts Viva La Mexico. There was t...

Actually not one of my favorite places originally, but it definitely grows on you the more you get out and explore. The second time I visited, I was able to feel more relaxed and I'd like to get out of the city on my next visit.

Arriving in Mexico
posted by:
Jun 10, 2006 - Sep 22, 2006
While in Mexico city, we travelled out to Teotihuacan, which are some amazing pre-Aztec Pyramids 50 km north of the city built between 100-1 BC. We were quite impressed with ourselves for getting there and back without a guide book (our one doesn´t start until southern Mexico) and not enough spanish to pronounce the name of our destination.  The ruins were pretty spectacular and Tris managed to trick Arlene in to climbing all 3 Pyramids!

My photos from Mexico City are now up in the last post.  The first group is from the hostel (free breakfast and dinner!) and the next is from the downtown walking tour.  We also paid the 45 pesos to go to the top of the Latinoamericana tower, which is where the night photos came from.  Today was the temples at Teotihuacan.  pretty self-explanatory.city is okay, a bit smelly.  sinking in an unbelievable way.  buildings are crooked and some...
