Diest is a small city and municipality located in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. It's about 35 minutes from Brussels and you can get there easily by train or bus. It has about 20000 inhabitants and has more monuments per square kilometer than any other Belgian city. It is a historic town with a lot of ancient buildings. For instance, the beguinage, is one of the monuments on the World Heritage List of the UNESCO. The little houses were built in the 17th and 18th century and the church was constructed in the 13th century. You will find other ancient buildings in the town center. On the 'Grote Markt' (big market) you will see a lot of beautiful house fronts. It's a nice market and it the summer it's lovely to drink something in an outdoor café. You will have the view of old buildings, the city hall and the Saint Sulpitius Church. If you see this church, you will understand that Diest was an important town, it's a huge church for such a small town...Diest has also his own beer, Gildebier, that you can find in several cafés in the city. In summer a lot people go to "de Halve Maan" (the half moon). This is a recreational parc with a huge outdoor swimming pool with sand around it. There are also visitor attractions for children who don't like to swim: a playground, animals etc. In the summer, the "Halve Maan" is the meeting place for the young inhabitants of Diest.
