Dhaka Overview

Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and the principal city of Dhaka District. Located on the banks of the Buriganga River, Dhaka, along with its metropolitan area, has a population of 20 million, making it the largest city in Bangladesh and the 11th most populous in the world. With its colourful history, Dhaka is known as the 'City of Mosques' and for the famous fine Muslin cloth.

Dhaka has grown to a BIG city now a days with travel time up to 4 hours from one end to the other. Here are a few broad areas with highlights:

Gulshan / Banani: This is where all the Embassies and Clubs are. This area is where most foreigners stay. It is good for work with private companies, food, accommodation etc.

Dhanmondi / Mohammadpur: Another residential cum commercial area with good dining and shopping options. However, accommodation is limited.

Old Dhaka: Famous for traditional food, archaeological sites. Roads are narrow and best mode of transport will be rickshaws

Uttara: New residential area with reasonable food and shopping options. Very near to airport. Lots of cheap hotels in this area.
