Dettifoss, europe's most powerful waterfall. Oct 10, 2010
One of the stunning landscape in iceland that is not to be missed is europe's largest and most powerful waterfall which is dettifoss.

located literally in the middle of nowhere in north iceland in the region of norðurland eystra. The landscape around dettifoss is so barren and only composed of sand, boulders and different shapes of basalt, it is mind boggling how europe's most powerfall is located here, where there is almost zero vegetation.

the fact is, that dettiffoss' water source comes from the great vatnajökull glacier (the largest glacier in terms of volume in europe) which is more or less 120 kms far! As the ice melts and turned into water - a river named jökulsá á fjöllum is formed which snakes it way into the vast and desolate interior highlands of iceland and drops 45 m down in jökulsárgljúfur canyon that forms the powerfull dettifoss.

the volume of water that flows down is so immense that you can just stand there and marvel how much water is thrown below in a second. Mist forms around jökulsárgljúfur canyon that it feels like raining all the time even if it isnt. The mist can also be seen and the roar of the water gushing can be heard while heading to dettifoss from the parking lot.

dettifoss is far from reykjavik, unfortunately there is not asphalt road the cuts into the center of iceland to shorten the travel by car because the only "road" that is between reykjavik and dettifoss in the center of iceland is the mountain road "sprengisandur" which is only accesible in summer months and only 4x4s are allowed. Nontheless, if you have all the time in the world to explore iceland by car - it is a very scenic drive in the ring road that circles iceland all up to dettifoss or if you have a very limited time, take a domestic flight from reykjavik to akureyri airport and from there dettifoss is practically reacheable.
amber's red dress stood out agains…
the power of dettifoss up close.
mist coming out from nowhere headi…
for art and art's sake - amber bra…

Mighty waterfall in a volcanic area Jun 24, 2010
Best known as Europe's most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss lies along the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river which has carved a deep canyon in the volcanic rock. The black volcanic sand and landscape along the canyon combined with might of the waterfall and the mist filling the air is a sight that is hard to find elsewhere. A hiking trail links this waterfall to some other ones, including the beautiful horseshoe-shaped Selfoss about 1km upstream. Only downside is that the place is relatively far from the capital, unless you happen to be staying in Akureyri.

Europe's Most Powerful Waterfall Jul 03, 2008
The road from Egilsstadir to Myvatn is quite is sight in itself, and we stopped a few times alount the route. Turned off the main road to go up to Dettifoss.

Was a bit further than anticipated, and the road was really rough and stoney, but very manageable. There is a car park laid out up beside the falls.

A short walk from the car park to the falls where you get a great view down the gorge the river has carved.

Again her, like Gullfoss, it is the thunderous sound of the water dropping 150ft at a rate of about 200 cubic meters per second. A quite awsome spectacle of the power of nature.

From the viewing area you can easily get down onto the rocks and wander down to the top of the falls, without getting soaked.

Yet another of the not to be missed sights in Iceland
