Traditional Danish Christmas Buffet Lunch Dec 01, 2013
Denmark has a very old history and tradition for Christmas which is very different compare with other countries.

First of all, most shops busy selling calendar candles which counting the day until Christmas and people lit the candle every day until the 24 December – this is mostly for adult. And for kid, they get a chocolate calendar which they can open and eat the chocolate everyday from the 01 to 24 December and sometimes they have cute gift from the pack of the chocolate calendar.

Secondly, the street decorated with Christmas decorations which are alight at night time. Before the government lit the light on the street, there is Christmas parade to start the beginning of the light at the Christmas street decorations.

Most of the restaurants has special offer for Christmas lunch and dinner. This time we go to the oldest restaurant in Denmark to sample the traditional Christmas buffet lunch and this package lunch minimum for 2 people and must be pre-order.

The Apotek (chemist) was turn into the restaurant in 1720. It consists of 4 separate low-ceilinged rooms, lighted by old petroleum lamps, glowing on the leaded window panes with motifs of forest gods and nymphs.

They keep the decorations as it is with the old bookself, photos of the old Denmark architectural, the famous painting of Hans Christian Anderson who has dine in the restaurant, etc.

It was very busy when we arrived in the restaurant and the lunch consists of 4 courses.

1st serving:

3 kinds of herring, marinated, spicy and curry (with these serve capers, onions, rye bread, lard and butter)

fried herring made with spices

fried fillet of plaice with remoulade

homemade pickled salmon

prawns with mayonnaise

2nd serving:

pastry shells with chicken asparagus stew

warm roast pork with pickled red cabbage

black pudding with syrup

duck’s breast fried with honey

warm liver pate with bacon and mushrooms

3rd serving:

3 kinds of cheese with biscuits etc.

4th serving:

Traditional rice/almond dessert with warm cherry sauce

There is a twist on this. Once you finish the dessert and if you find the almond, do not eat it but show it to the staff and you will get a surprise gift.

By the time we finish our first course, I was rather full. But I cannot resist the delicious Danish roast pork with crunchy skin, so I savor it all.

All of the food is really good and huge in quantity. It was definitely too much for 2 people and I feel like a stranded whale after eat those food. I would definitely go back to this place.
