Despina's Place Boston Reviews
Late-night food Apr 13, 2008
Eating late night in Boston is always tricky. Bars are closed at 2am and there is not much available in the way of food. Most of your options are Chinese, Pizza, or sidewalk vendor-choose wisely(you can have a finer dining experience but I'm talking about cheap eats). But, to this local nothing satisfies like a good slice of pizza, enter Despina's Place. This pizza sub shop is certainly not out to amaze you with stunning or trendy decor, nor are they serving up the best slice of pizza you have ever eaten. They are simply offering good food cheaply and quickly.
The menu is simple: pizza, subs, burgers, and other simple fares, along with some basic Greek itams Gyro, Spanakopita, Baklava. Generally the food comes pretty quick, although, there are some times, especially after 1AM Friday and Saturday nights, it might err, probably will take a little longer(20min waits are not uncommon). Be warned the pizza is greasy, sometimes this hits the spot after a night of drinking (definetly no hangover in the morning) other time you might find yourself dabbing with a napkin.
The space itself is quirky, simple, tacky and fun. Red brick walls are decorated with faded posters of Greek Islands, collegiate banners, and assortment of live plants that somehow never seem to change. I've been eating here for about 10 years and I swear these are the same plants from '98 but I digress. The people working there are friendly and service comes with a smile. Although, at the later hours of the night on Friday and Saturday it can be really busy and they generally dont care (who does though?) about whatever happened in the bar that most people tend to shout about while waiting for food (why are you shouting? my ears already hurt). Cut 'em some slack, its late, their tired, and they're just trying to serve you some food. However, there are plenty of people there in the later hours just hanging out with some friends sharing a few slices and some stories. All of this lends to a unique atmosphere and is probably one of the reason that the restuarant has been in operation since the mid 60s.
Despina's Place is the type of place you come in hungry and you leave satisfied, it's that simple. I hope you enjoy its quirkyness as much as I do.
