A luxurious underground hide-out Dec 20, 2012
The Dessert Cave claims to be the only international four star UNDERGROUND hotel in the world, but it is not all completely underground. Only about a dozen rooms are the so-called "cave rooms", all others are above ground. And even these are technically not underground, but dug out of the rock on ground floor level. So no need to take an elevator or stairs down. There's also an underground bar, but all other facilities such ad the reception etc... are again above ground.

The hotel is located on the main street, next door to the mine museum and in walking distance of the opal shops and all mayor attractions.

Check-in is possible as from 2PM. Since we arrived earlier, we already completed the paperwork and could leave our bags behind the reception. But when we returned near 5PM, our room still wasn't ready. They had yet to separate the beds and put new bedding on to turn the double into a twin. Not the kind of service you'd expect for a four star property.

Our room, the nr 3, was a so-called undeground or cave room, but on ground level. It's a spacious room with the twin beds, a sofa, a desk, fridge, coffee and tea making facilities and even an i-pod dock.

The bathroom is so spacious it resembles a ball room. There's a sink, a shower and plenty of complimentary little bottles of soap etc...

At first glance the room seemed clean, but the wall to wall carpet in the room should have seen a vaccuum cleaner more often! Rather appaling was the cockroach we found right under the pillow in my travel companion's bed. It was right there, right under the supposedly clean sheets. It was quite an ordeal to catch it and liquidate. Hopefully the vermin is a result of the hot climate and not because of a lack of hygiene, but who will tell?

There's a small pool open to hotel guests. The premises can be accessed with the room key. It's a pleasant enough area with a few sun loungers. However the pool itself is rather filthy. There are dead bugs everywhere and a lot of green stuff on the bottom. Despite the hot desert temperatures, the water is surprisingly cool.

We did not have breakfast at the hotel, so did not see the restaurant area. Nor did we visit the underground opal shop and display. The underground bar was quite dead when we walked in, having only two patrons. This is apparently normal. However the group we we're travelling with put some coins into the jukebox and got a party started. This attracted more hotel guests and people from outside, making the place stay open till midnight.

The Dessert Cave is an okay hotel and unique if you get to stay in a dug-out room. Yet in my opinion it did not merrit its four stars. Nonetheless it is probably the most upmarket accommodation there is to be found in Cooper Pedy.
