Cute market in a romantic setting Dec 14, 2008
This extremely cute little Christmas-market is in the Festung Hohensalzburg. Not only do you get to see the stunning, medieval castle and the city from above, but they also sell a different type of arts and crafts.

The best thing is to go, shortly before sunset, so you can see the castle and museums in daylight and the stunning view after sunset. And the market is also at its best with the torches and candles.

The people who work there dress up in medieval dresses, very cute.

The gluhwein (mulled wine) was excellent and cost 2,50 euros. They also sell schnapps.

Its open from mid-November till Christmas and until 6 pm.

The only pain is that it costs 5 euros to enter the castle, but you get the entry to the museums and a guide included. Its cheaper to walk up, the stairs are between St.Peters Friedhof and the Stiegl-Keller and with a bit of fitness takes only ten minutes.

Christmas Market to get you into the mood Nov 27, 2008
The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt has a long tradition. Its also surrounded by historic buildings and the Dome.

It consists of Stalls that sell all sorts of arts and crafts, wintery clothes and of course, mulled wine (Gluhwein), punch and pretzels.

It also has a large Christmas-Tree and a ice-skating-rink. Overall its very romantic, even though it is crowded almost every day, in the pre-christmas time.

Whats especially good are the different sorts of pretzels and I love the rotary-club-gluhwein-stand... the people there are nice and its for a good cause as well.

Whats annoying is the music that comes out of the loudspeakers, you can only hear so many carols.

The Christkindlmarkt is opened end of September and is open daily from about 3 pm to 9pm.

An altogether Christmassy Experience! Nov 29, 2007
The Austrians know how to 'do' Christmas! The Salzburg Christmas Markets are amazing - you can get everything from tree baubles to caramelised nuts to Sheepskin slippers to candles, bowls, table cloths and hat and scarves.

The main market is in Domplatz, outside Dom St Peter. The neighbouring market is run by the same company, in Residenzplatz. There are also a few others, in courtyards off Getreidegasse, and out at Hellbrunn, Mirabellplatz and up at the Fortress.

You can find websites for the others at this link...

And apart from all the material things you can buy, there's also lots of Gluhwein stalls, hot dog sellers, and sauerkraut vendors. You could easily spend two hours wandering around the St Peters market, stopping for munchies on the way. There's also lots of shops around the markets, selling - again - everything from clothes to festive decorations to food.

I'd have loved to be there when it was snowing - it would really have made it seem Christmassy, but on this occasion it didn't snow in Salzburg itself.

The choirs which sing in the square on Sundays really add to the atmosphere, and the nativity scenes, Christmas trees and all round jolliness of the vendors helps too.

A word of advice though - if you can visit the main city markets during the week rather than Friday through Sunday I'd advise it. It was so busy at the weekend it was almost unpleasant - especially when buggies were run up your ankles! Some of the markets - such as Hellbrunn - are only open at the weekends so they're always pretty busy, but for Domplatz especially - go during the week!

PS: I've rated this free because you don't have to pay to get in, but obviously the price of items for sale varies!
