Yurimaguas looked a lot better in the daylight. I discovered that there was a lot more to the town than what I had seen in the limited light of the night before, and that being a quiet Sunday night as well. Down at the port they didn’t have any information about the boat I wanted to take, even though it was the main one for the route down the river to Iquitos. It’s not the first time that my Lonely Planet was seriously out of date with information. I found the offi...

Arrived in Iquitos around 5:30am and was met by someone from the Explorama company who put me on a very strange old bus that was all wood planks inside. I met Debbie and Jan, and Marlene and Carl - two couples from the states on a tour vacation. They were very nice folks! We drove through the villiage just outside of Iquitos which was very primitive. This was my first real look at Peru and I was having severe culture shock! We then drove through the city of Iquitos which was much bigger than ...

Hi friends, I am back in Iquitos Peru. Sorry I haven't posted here lately. I do better when I can obsess on one or two problems. I have been working on too many problems. I had to decide which were most important and work on those. This blog suffered. Now I want to report what my crew and I have been working on.We are rebuilding our Amazon riverboat, Dawn on the Amazon I. It is longer and wider and can sleep more guests than before. We improved the balance by installing a 100 gallon gas...

OK so Ecuador is done and dusted and it was a hell of a three weeks with more ups and downs than Debbie does Doncaster (The Deluxe Double D Edition). I´ll do a separate entry for some of the things I´ve missed out previously, but for now, safely over the border in Peru, I thought I´d write about the splendid buses we´ve been leaping on and off for the last three weeks. And so I give you:
The 10 Commandments of Bus Travel in Ecuador:
1. Thou shalt have lot...

I went to Iquitos in order to attend to a business course. Anyway, I could spend a free Sunday just before going back home. My flight was scheduled at 9am, but a friend who lives there offered to show me around Iquitos. He asked me, what are you gonna do in Lima?
Mmm, he was right. I had no plans. So I decided to stay and enjoy a nice day. We didn´t have much time, but tried to do our best. Iquitos is a very warm city, well it´s in the rainforest. We visited Quistococha a park with a beaut...

My greatest discovery of this trip was that a helicopter is the ideal way to really appreciate the beauty of the amazon rainforest. Since it is completely level for hundreds of miles with hardly any hills at all it is almost impossible to see much from the ground. And the airliners usually fly too high, above the usual low rainclouds which cover up most of the view. Our helicopter flying at no more than 300 meters above tree level provided the ideal platform to appreciate the beauty of t...

I worry sometimes that I am too enthusiastic about everything I write. What if people think I'm just a drama queen, and don't take me seriously when I ramble on for pages about something I loved.
Well, who cares. The rainforest was AMAZING! Every square centimeter of it was absolutely bursting with life. As you can see my pictures from this place were few and far betweeen. I was too busy staring around me with wide eyes and dropped jaw.
We got to see a t...

We woke up the next morning with the sun already drifting through the mosquio net walls of our hut. The couple in the neighboring hut called us over to look at a giant tarantula on their "roof".
At breakfast there was a big group of people at the lodge who were eating from a different spread of food from the rest of us. They all sat together and wore new-agey clothing, and for some reason every one at my table assumed they were a cult. The guide said they were their to become prei...

I am going to take you behind the scenes of the Amazon Animal Orphanage and Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm in Iquitos Peru. Most people know a little bit about the Butterfly Farm. I have earned my insights studying and photographing at the Butterfly farm.First, let me introduce you to the cast of characters:Tony Piraña thinks she is the star of the show at the Butterfly Farm. Tony is a White-fronted Capuchin Monkey, raised by street children in Iquitos Peru. Capuchins are considered to be the s...

In our infinite wisdom and to save time, we decided to catch the overnight bus for the border crossing to Peru. We left Vilcabamba at 8:00pm bound for Loja (still in Ecuador) and the start of our International bus ride. I cant remember the exact price but it was around $US8...all long distance buses in Ecuador roughly work out to be $US1 for every hour of travel. Not bad. The trip was an epic 8 hr haul (well epic for a couple of little Tasmanians but is really the norm ove...
