Located at 3.090 m.a.s.l. in the North-western part of Peru. Ancash is cradle of the first culture that comprised a great part of the Peruvian territory. They were characterized by their sculptures of men, animals and misterious symbols and by the construction of big temples and fortresses.
It comprises a coastal strip as well as the Andean mountain range. Today, Ancash is one of the most important tourist centers in Peru due to its archaeological ruins and privileged geography, including glaciers and snow-capped peaks of over 6 000 meter high. In the Highlands visitors can find towns full of traditions all over the Callejón de Huaylas.

Almost missed the bus to Trujillo this morning, a combination of waking up late and dwadling getting my things ready. By the time I had my bag downstairs, Teo was nowhere to be seen. Anita was trying to call him but he wasn't answering. I should have re-confirmed with him in the morning when I saw him at breakfast! Luckily there was one of those little motorbike taxis parked near the hostel door and the driver took me over there with a few minutes to spare. But i...

Based on yesterday, today should be fun. We were going to drive 360km to Trujillo (pronounced Troo-ghee-yo) of which, the first 80km is on a red road, the next 100-120km is on yellow “road” and the rest is back onto red.
Trujillo is on the coast and is, based on the guidebooks, Peru’s second biggest city at somewhere ranging from 600,000 to 1,2m people (you can see that statistics are not always the same in the 2 books).
As a result of Trujillo being on the coast this would be a...

Holy crap, altitude sickness. The plan was Circuito Llanganuco Santa Cruz starting in Huaraz. It turned out to be one of those classic it all came together travelling experiences. I swapped a pair of shoes for the tour, they were a little small. The guide needed a new pair and was keen to trade them, a zero sum game all round. A good start indeed.
The pictures tell most of the story however a few noteworthy extras would have to be the trekkers from Austria. I have to hand it to th...

Leaving from Tayabamba the bus made its way up higher into the mountains on the start of the 8 hour trip to Sihuas. As the road climbed higher we left the reaches of civilization behind and passed into the high altitude zone where there was barely any visible signs of life. At this high altitude there was only short grass on the mountains and no trees, nothing higher than one to two feet. It was actually really nice to see hillsides unscarred from agriculture and wild herds of sheep roaming t...
