Very close to Denali National Park Sep 15, 2009
The Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge in Denali is quite different than the one at Mt McKinley and is anything but in the wilderness. Located on the "main drag" it is basically the only thing on one side of the street perched on a cliff above the Nenana River and is about one mile for the National Park entrance.

The main lodge is two-story and has a huge comfortable seating area and fireplace upstairs with the check-in and local tour desk at one end, and restrooms, lockers, and temporary baggage holding area at the other. Downstairs there is a nice small buffet restaurant/coffee shop, a souvenir shop, and an internet cafe.

There are several other out buildings in the area that include several specialty souvenir shops, a Pizza Parlor, a specialty dinner restaurant with an evening music show each night, and an upscale restaurant which specializes in Salmon. There is also a beauty salon and hot tubs available.

The rooms are situated in several two and three story buildings behind the lodge and up the street. The two story structures with exterior halls seem to be the older rooms, and the three story buildings up the street are the newer with indoor hallways and elevators. Our particular building, which was located at the very end of the property, also had a large lobby and seating area and a coffee and pastry shop.

Our room was clean and had two double beds, a small table and two chairs and a writing desk. Cable television, phone and in-room wireless internet, but no microwave or refrigerator. The bathroom was medium sized and included a hair dryer.

This facility also has a shuttle system for driving guests from their building to the main lodge. This again is needed because there is no parking around the buildings, only out in the very front. Again, this facility is only open from mid May to mid September.

Across the street are quite a few souvenir and gift shops, restaurants, and a market.

Our complaint here was that they do not have a phone system where you can request a call if and when the Aurora Borealis is visible. When I asked, they told me to just set my alarm for midnight or 1 a.m.

Salmon Bake was our accommodation of choice during our short trip to Denali. They have two types of cabins - economy and standard.

Being the cheapos that we are, we stayed at the economy ones. Their economy cabins were basically foam insulated tent-like cabins that look like a tent from the outside, but are finished like cabins on the inside with painted wood walls, screened windows, electric heat and lights. There were 2 double beds complete with linens, blankets and towels inside. And then the bathroom facilities are shared with the other economy cabins.

What was kinda creepy though was that there were locks on all of the cabins from the outside... So if you were inside and you left your lock outside or if someone else came by with their own lock, well - watch out! ;) No such prank occurred in our group, luckily!

Since they only have 12 of these suckers, make reservations! Also, they have a free shuttle which takes you to Denali's visitor center. Very convenient for spending your days at the park.
