Deming Overview

Deming is a decent sized town of about 14,600 (up 4% since 2000) located at exits 82 and 85 on Interstate 10, at the intersections of U.S. Highway 180 and several NM Highways. Deming is about 60 miles West of Las Cruces and 33 miles North of Mexico. There is a surprisingly large amount of archeological evidence in the Deming area indicating pre-historic Indians inhabited the area thousands of years ago. Stone implements, stone carvings, beads, beautiful pottery, and other artifacts show both the Mimbres and the Casas Grandes cultures lived in the area. The pottery made by the Mimbres Culture is considered to be among the most beautiful made in that timeframe, and is on display in a number of museums throughout the country. Deming was founded in 1881 and was named for Mary Ann Deming Crocker wife of Charles Crocker who was a leader of the railroads in the late 1800s. Deming was an important port of entry along the U.S./Mexican border until the Gadsden Purchase in 1853 moved the border. The silver spike was driven here in 1881, completing the link up of the Southern Pacific and Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe rail lines making it the second transcontinental railroad in the United States. Deming was incorporated in 1902. The Luna County Court House was built in 1910, and was designed by W. B. Corwin. It is one of the prettiest court houses in the state and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as is the park across the street. The Luna Mimbres Museum in Deming is listed as one of the best museums in New Mexico. Across the street is another historic building "The Custom House". This was where the people crossing the border from Mexico would stop to pay customs duty on items they were bringing into the United States. The building has been nicely restored with items from the period. Deming is mentioned in the Border Trilogy by Cormac McCarthy. Several movies have been filmed in Deming and surrounding parts of Luna County to include: Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull; Gas, Food, and Lodging; the French movie Two Men in Town; and the Themyscira scenes in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Rockhound State Park, Spring Canyon State Park, and City of Rocks State Park are all a short drive from Deming. Deming also hosts The Great American Duck Race the third weekend of August each year. St. Clair Winery (the largest in the state) and the Luna Rossa Winery are located here.
