Deer Lodge Overview

Deer Lodge is a town of about 3000 (down 12% since 2000) located along Interstate 90 (exits 184 and 187) in Powell County in Western Montana. The valley where Deer Lodge is located was occupied prior to 1860; but permanent settlement did not occur until that date. Although a few different tribes passed through the valley on their way to hunting grounds to the east none settled here. Lewis and Clark passed by the valley in 1805 and 1806 but did not really explore it. The first documented exploration of the valley was by Father Pierre-Jean De Smet in 1841. In 1846 this area became part of the Oregon Territory, then Washington Territory, then Idaho Territory before finally becoming part of the Montana Territory upon its creation in 1864. Deer Lodge is the county seat of Powell County which was formed in 1901.

Deer Lodge has a very nice historic district with several buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. There are 3 districts and 10 individual locations in Deer Lodge listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
