the shrinking Dead Sea Mar 25, 2017
One of the most striking natural phenomenon in the earth is the Dead Sea, although not the saltiest, it's high salinity alone could make one float above it's waters. the dead sea also marks the earth's natural deepest point below sea level - 430.5 metres (1,412 ft).

the sea is very rich in minerals - specially the high concetration of salts - it is believed to cure skin diseases, thats why many cosmetic companies harvest the minerals of the sea. in turn, also combined with natural circumstances (like evaporating water), the sea is shrinking rapidly. the dead sea splitted into two - the larger and deeper northern part and the smaller and shallower southern part. a narrow channel was build to connect the north and south so that water from the north could replenish the faster evaporating waters of the south.

the best view to see the split of the dead sea is from masada as the mountain is high enough to see the acros the surroundings of the judean desert.

the sea is shared between two countries: israel and jordan.
