DeBolt Overview

DeBolt is an unincorporated hamlet of some 133 souls lying just off Highway 43 between Grande Prairie and Valleyview in the Smoky River area. The correct spelling of the placename is DeBolt (note the capitalisation of the letter B) and the locals dislike the constant mis-spelling Debolt which apparently even StatsCan (the Government statistics agency) gets wrong.

DeBolt is named for the original settlers in 1919 called Elbert and Laura and their family who had come here from Washington state. Elbert's brother George and wife Virginia opened a stopping place where you could put up for the night and Virginia Avenue is named for her.

For a small community they have an impressive range of facilities with a library and a huge social centre which boasts an indoor playground, fitness centre, banqueting hall, meeting rooms and a curling rink. It even has it's own new firehall (2015).It has a small hotel thus continuing the old tradition started by Virginia and even hosts it's own rodeo.
