Nestled in the middle of Golden Gate Park, the De Young is San Francisco's largest and most famous fine arts museum. Housed in a earthy meets industrial looking copper-plated building, it's decidely more modern than the more classic Legion of Honor, SF's other fine arts museum. Personally, I prefer the Legion, but the De Young is nice too.

Notable collections include a really cool section on Oceanic art, a collection of American paintings and the kooky Dorothy and George Saxe Collection of contemporary art. There's also new exhibitions all the time, too.

There's a nice little sculpture garden outside, and a observation tower from where you can get great views of the city. Notice the cracks in the ground outside the entrance as well -- it's meant to reflect the natural fault lines on top of which the museum was built.

I didn't actually go inside yet. But that area of Golden Gate Park is great! People were actually laying on the grass. It felt so European. People were playing music and just being around on a sunny day. So this is the San Francisco charm.

What did you think of the architecture of the de Young? It's kind of controversial...some people think it looks like a rusty battleship, but i liked it!
