De Vlaamsche Pot Brugge Reviews
One to avoid... Jul 12, 2008
If your looking for typical Flemish food, by all means try this restaurant but whatever you do, don't point out that there is sand in your mussels!
Hidden on a small alley off the Noordzandstraat, the restaurant is pleasantly decorated in a warm, cosy combination of camp kitsch (the waiters all have devil/angel wings on their shirts)and discreet intimacy. Even if the prices are steep, the menu looks temptingly tasty, promising typical Flemish dishes such as smoked ham, Flemish sausages and, of course, mussels! So far so good, we thought.
My sausages and ham were delicious, but the mussels, when they came, were full of sand. Our waitress, first tried to assure us that this was a sign of their authenticiy, but when we showed her the sand, visible inthe shell, she went off to the kitchen to see what she could do - and never returned. Her replacement ignored us as long as possible, and when it became apparant that we wouldn't vanish, asked us if there was anything else we wanted. We explained that we were still waiting for an answer from the kitchen.
He archily pointed out that the mussels had been washed three times - so it was obviously our fault that there was still sand in them, perhaps? We showed him the sand and he too went off to see what he could do. The answer came back: there was nothing to be done. As prospects of a tip disappeared, the service became even more stilted and glacial.
The letter of complaint we wrote to the manager went unanswered.
There are other restaurants on 't Zand, who do good Flemish food and combine it with good Flemish service. Not this one. The uniforms are nice though.
