Old-fashioned cafe near the Royal Palace Feb 13, 2017
The Cafe de Oriente is in a great location on the Plaza de Oriente overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. Most tourists choose to sit outside on the terrace which is understandable as the views are great. Having browsed the menu, I initially decided against eating here as the terrace menu was your usual fare of overpriced pizzas and salads aimed at the tourist market. However, I saw a notice board by the doorway that said the restaurant did a set menu of the day which was only available to people eating inside so I went in and asked for a table. The majority of other diners inside were locals. I was served by a professional, if uncharismatic waitress. I opted for fish and potato stew for my starter followed by salted lamb chops with chips for the main. I was brought bread and some tapas prior to the meal. I ordered a Mahou beer with the meal and for dessert I had some very delicious profiteroles. The meal including the beer came in at an absolute steal, just over 13 Euros! This is compared to the 20 Euros they were charging for just a pizza on the terrace! So my advice if you visit here is EAT INSIDE!

One of the oldest cafes in Madrid May 23, 2008
This cafe is one of the oldest in Madrid. I loved it. You don't have to go here in the evening for a drink or to have dinner. The best thing is to go here in the afternoon and have a lunch or coffee with chocolate cake. The chocolate cake is a must here. The interior of the cafe is really nice but when the wheather is nice you can sit outside on the terrace. From there, you have a beautiful view of the Palacio Real and the Opera. The waiters here are really nice and polite and some of them even speak English, which definately isn't usual in Madrid. The one minor point is that it's a little expensive here.
