De La Warr Pavilion Bexhill Reviews
Events, Art, Film and Food Apr 13, 2009
The jewell in Bexhill’s crown seems to be the de la warr pavilion which takes pride of place overlooking the promenade and the beach.
It’s a large white building but the design fits well into it’s surroundings. In front is a large courtyard where outdoor events are held but when we were there the only point of interest was the architecturally designed mobile bandstand which sat quietly in the corner.
Inside the building you are greeted by a fabulous spiral staircase leading from the foyer to the top level. Large panes of glass allow a view out to the English Channel whilst protecting you from the elements of the English Spring.
The pavilion is a grade 1 listed building and hosts contemporary art exhibitions, film, and live performance. de la warr hosts regular public events or has room for your private function and/or conference.
There is a licensed café/restaurant on the upper floor. We decided to try it after spending an hour viewing the artwork in the two exhibition spaces. It was a busy lunchtime but our light lunches and coffees were served quickly. Very satisfactory!
We wandered out to the stairs and exited to the roof for a good look around before returning to the promenade out front.
