Boat-rental Graslei Apr 12, 2011
If you want to come to Ghent, you should see the city from a boat-perspective. The best way to get on this sight-seeing boats, is going to the Graslei. Every hour or half-an-hour (depends on the season) there are boats departing.

You will see very old houses and the castle (Gravensteen)and get a very entertaining English-speeking guide with you.

Some boatfirms even provide an Ice-cream.

The best time to visit Ghent is during the 'Gentse feesten' in july. This time of the year, the whole city is in a party-mood. And there is street-amusement during the whole day, on every corner.

This time, there are concerts on a platform on the Graslei, and the boat will take you under this platform.

I find it the best in the evening, because the Graslei is very exotic illuminated with green and orange lights.

Not an ordinary city street! Nov 26, 2010
The Graslei must be one of my very favourite city streets. I know that many find the city of Brugge more picturesque and that is indeed a great Belgian time-warp - but the Graslei runs beside a stretch of river that is not only picturesque but is flanked by buildings spanning several centuries.

The Spijker, hte oldest, dates from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. Ghent was the staple port for wheat and some had to be kept in store here for bad times.

Near to the bridge to your left as you face the buildings from the water boat trips go and you can get a commentary about the historic buildings. I went in an open boat and a thunder storm started. Umbrellas were issued and the boatman tried to get us shelter under the bridge - to little avail. As you might guess, the next day was lovely!
