Daytrip to Trivandrum Oct 14, 2015
Trivandrum short for Thiruvananthapuram is a quite interesting town and only 45 minutes by train (a bit more by bus) from Varkala.

The Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple is a short walk from Trivandrum Central train station and the bus terminal next to the East Fort. Very impressive, but only Hindus can enter the temple and also they must follow a strict dress code.

From East Fort you can take a bus to the museums and the zoo (7 Rupies), the Napier House and Museum (10 am to 5 pm, Monday closed, 5 Rupies, no pictures!) is very interesting also the Kerala Museum opposite but 200 Rupies entrance fee for foreigners. On the way (on GM Road) the Kerala Government Secretariat some churches and a university.

For the train ticket you can use the ticket machine, 43 Rupies, some trains might be quite crowded. Alternative from the Varkala temple are some buses to Chirayinkezhu, 17 Rupies then local train for 10 Rupies (this train was not so crowded) and also a few direct buses.
