Day Trips by Train into Austria Feb 06, 2017
Passau is located on the border to Austria and counts as border station. If you intend to do a day trip into Austria, for example to Linz or Wels, you can do the whole trip on ÖBB (Austrian Railway) tickets. They are cheaper than international tickets issued by DB, so make sure you buy your tickets from them.

Passau's central station (Hauptbahnhof) has two options to buy Austrian tickets:

1. I found one single ÖBB ticket machine in the station hall, hidden behind a column, on the side by the Reisezentrum.

2. There are three ticket counters inside the Reisezentrum - the one on the far left, and only this one, is an ÖBB counter. If you prefer talking to a live person and being able to ask for advice, use this counter. Fares are the same as from the ticket machine.

For a day trip, your best bet is the Oberösterreich (Upper Austria) day pass. The fare depends on your destination. To Linz it was 16 Euro something if I remember correctly. For a very small surcharge it extends to public transport within the destination city, in my case Linz.

These tickets have one big advantage: Unlike the German Länder-Tickets, the Austrian day passes are valid on trains of all categories. The ticket includes the fast ICE trains, which is very convenient.
