Day Trip to Tobago Nov 04, 2010
I was recently on a business trip to Trinidad and flew up to Tobago for a day trip. Since Trinidad and Tobago are the furthest southeast of any of the Caribbean islands, there is a much different environment there. The locals are still very much of the "Ya Mon" lifestyle, however, since the country has their own oil, they have more money than other Carib islands and are not dependant on the tourist industry to survive. The physical appearance is also different. The water surrounding Trinidad is mostly the blue-gray water of the Atlantic Ocean. A short flight northeast to Tobago poses a much different experience. Much more typical of the Carib, Tobago is surrounded by the crystal blue water and has a much slower lifestyle than its "metro" sister island of Trinidad. What makes Tobago different from other Carib islands is the fact that the mountains in the center of the island are home to the oldest protected rain forest in the world. With endless trails, Tobago is as much an eco destination as it is a relaxing Carib retreat on the west coast. The east coast of the island is much more akin to Hawaii with its rocky shoreline and blue-gray Atlantic waters.
