Day Trip from Montevideo to Buenos Aires Jan 19, 2013
Many companies offer the option of taking a day trip from Buenos Aires to Montevideo, Uruguay. They all offer relatively the same itinerary: depart BA by ferry around 8-9am, arrive in Montevideo around 10:30-11:30 (it's a 2.5 hour ride on a FAST ferry), do the Hop On Hop Off from around 12:00-16:00, back to ferry by 18:00, back in BA before 21:00.

Sounds like a good day...you get to get another passport stamp and visit another country. The company I used, BsAs4U.com, delivered the service perfectly. (You can also purchase the day trip from Viator.com.) I have no complaints on the execution of the services whatsoever.

The problem is, a day trip to Montevideo, with essentially four hours to Hop On Hop Off, is simply not enough time to see this unique city. If you've spent any time in Buenos Aires, you will be amazed by the striking differences between it and Montevideo, and will find yourself with little time to explore. The HOHO bus had about eight stops, #1 being the ferry's, but considering the busses come every half hour (ours came every hour, but I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt that this was due to it being winter), it is easy to do the math and realize that you cannot explore seven stops in four hours.

So here is my advice: skip the day trip. If you're going to Buenos Aires, dedicate a couple extra days to take the ferry to Montevideo one morning, explore, overnight, and return the following evening. It may cost you more but you will feel that your money was more well spent. I still joke to people that my Uruguay stamp was "my most expensive passport stamp."

If you absolutely cannot overnight and HAVE to do the day trip, my suggestion is to get off at the 2nd stop, which is The Plaza Independencia. Walk to stop #3 within an hour, board bus and continue onward. SKIP LUNCH as time is precious. Decide on a couple more stops you would like to see, keeping in mind the time of the last ferry and the next bus, if there is one. Do NOT get off at the last stop before the ferry, which is a mall, not a traditional shopping area - if you are looking for souvenirs from Uruguay, you will NOT find them there! (Your best bet for those would be in the Stops 2 & 3 areas.)

I hope this helps!
