Day Trip to Kolkata Oct 05, 2009
I spent 1 day in Kolkata during my last trip to India. Flew in in the morning and flew back in the evening. As such, my impressions may not represent an accurate review of the city. Perhaps on a return trip I will be able to refine my opinions. Nonetheless, my first impression was unfavorable. I knew I was in for an experience when my agent told me on the way that we were going to the "real India". Walking out of the airport, I was drawn to thoughts of a movie depicting a third world airport; as I exited the building in my business suite, I was met by thousants of local peasants either waiting for their guests or trying to make a buck off of those who were. Due to its largely communist state government affiliation, which has been in power for many years, Kolkata's state, West Bengal (home of the Bengal Tiger), has tended to not value capitalism and it does not contain some of the same city improvements visible in other Indian cities. The terrain and climate were sub-tropical and it was extremely hot and humid, with a landscape littered with palm trees. Poverty is rampant here, which is probably Mother Theresa chose this as her choice of location to exercise her charity work. Kolkata is also the home to the antiquated British East India Trading Company due to its strategic sea port location and access to multiple river tributaries. There was a small, clean part of the down town area which was home to our favorite place to eat lunch - the Taj Hotel. It has actually become a tradition of ours to ALWAYS eat lunch at the local Taj. While we were in town we had 2 meetings, one each with local and state police in the area.
