How did they ever move it? Mar 17, 2017
If the traveller is anywhere in central Dawson Creek then they cannot miss the huge wooden structure pictured which is a grain elevator. Until I first visited Alberta in 2015 I had never seen such a thing and so, for the benefit of readers who may be in the same position as I was, I shall attempt to explain what it is, what it did and what it is now.

A grain elevator is exactly what the name implies namely a mechanism for lifting bulk grain to a higher level within a storage facility as it awaits onward transportation. It was invented in New York state by two chaps called Dart and Dunbar as far back as 1842 and quite revolutionised the way bulk grain was handled it is did away with the need for sacks.

Dawson Creek was essentially founded on industrial scale agriculture and at one point there were 13 of these giants in and around the City with five of them being situated in a row here at the railhead. That must have been quite some sight.

Technology moves on as it must and by 1982 there were only two remaining, both under threat of demolition. The burghers of the City impress me greatly with their foresightedness and decided that such an important symbol of the area's past must not be left to such a fate and so set about rescuing one. The owners very graciously sold the authorities the entire structure you see here for the princely sum of $1CAD.

There was only one problem in that it had to be moved. surely a task as mammoth as the buildings themselves. The annexe weights 290,000 lbs. and the main elevator a staggering 460,000 lbs. A team of contractors from Edmonton was hired at a cost of $110,000 and after some preparatory work the move began on 19th November and was completed in a mere week which I find almost impossible to comprehend. It is now home to the excellent Art Gallery which is very much the social hub of the City and surrounding area but I can't help thinking that the building itself is really the star here.
