Affordable but not fancy in the Hamptons Aug 14, 2014
The Hamptons evoke images of wealth, polo races, and celebrities. Montauk, while technically a part of the Hamptons, is so far out that even they have not quite discovered its charms. While there are plenty of tony places to stay here too, there are also many more budget friendly accommodations. My extended family have been meeting for a week at the Daunt's Albatross Inn for years and this year I finally joined them. The place is definitely NOT what one thinks of when they imagine Hamptons lodging, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The rooms are functional, a bit dated, but that kind of gives it a hokey charm. There is a nice pool and courtyard where kids seem to rule. It is one block from a lovely ocean beach filled with bonfire pits. It is a short walk to the village and all Montauk has to offer. You get what you pay for. The continental breakfast is very basic and the coffee terrible. But there are great breakfast places nearby so you won't starve. The wifi is spotty. But if you want a laid back place near the beach in a cute beachside village, you could do worse.
