Pleasingly, London has no shortage of quirky, independent, second-hand book shops as a means to counterbalance all of the Waterstones branches (the premier high street book retailer in the UK) that litter its high streets.

Daunt Books has got several branches dotted across London. But it is its Marylebone flagship store that comes recommended to the traveller for the rather simple reason that it has travel-themed books as its principal (though not exclusive) focus.

Even putting that aside, its elegant, Edwardian façade and interior arguably makes it the most aesthetically appealing bookshop in London. The ‘general’ section of the store greets as you enter, and its pleasingly spacious, with low-hanging, green-lamp shaded lights bringing to mind the traditional sort you see in traditional, oak-panelled, leather-furnished libraries.

Yet it is, of course, the travel section where it really comes in to its own. Nowhere, not even in outlets that exclusively stock travel books (such as one I came across in Zurich), have I seen so many travel books housed under one roof. So much so that they take up three floors worth of bookcases, with the ground floor room the visitor first experiences sandwiched by a mezzanine above and a basement below, all of which are generously stocked.

Such is the sheer number of books here that whole bookcases are given over to countries. Admittedly, these tend to be for the Western European countries most frequented by the average British holidaymaker. But that’s not to say that all continents, and the vast majority of the world’s countries, aren’t very well served indeed: travel guide books, travel writing memoirs, histories...they’re all here. And there’s even a big selection of second hand travel books as well!

All this in a very pleasant, well-lit and tastefully decorated shop floor environment. Plus, if you buy a book, you get a free bookmark! You can easily spend hours here and still not browse all the books on offer. Hands down the best place in London for those looking for books related to travel.
