The Magnificent alter of Eminence.. Jun 22, 2013
Tuticorin is a port city famous for export of fish, minerals, chemicals, salt industries and a huge importer of timber and other goods through feeder vessels from Colombo. It is situated in the Gulf of Mannar and proximate to Srilanka. It was a prominent port for several centuries say from the good old days of the Pandya kingdom in Tamilnadu. It is today the one among the active oldest surving natural harbours in the world. It had trafef with the Romans,Chinese and Arabs. It had seen the reign of the Cholas, and all kingdoms which ruled south Tamilnadu until Vasco da Gama from Portugal first set in motion the foreign rule and influence over the region. He was followed by the Dutch. The British finally had their regional administrative head quarters prior to Indian independence.

Although I had spent a year of study in this now dusty and contaminated township and albeit I kept cris crossing it time and often I decided to visit this church to hear my Sunday mass obligation at this church as this is one of two churches which say mass in English.

This church came to be established in the late 14th century and facing the Harbour now a fishing harbour and one meant for sail boats sailing to Sri lanka. What was once built as the church of St.Peter later came to be called and ordained curiously as the Church of Das Neives or the church of the Lady of Snows although snow is alien to this part of the world.A magnificent and grand alter attracts your attention and venerated statues of Catholic saints adorn the church. The church has a nice wooden interior ceiling and the church is very active today than ever before. The church feast day is 44 days from today and it will be on that day when the statue of Mary will be decorated in a huge golden car and taken around the main streets of the town around the church.I know that more than a hundred thousand people congregate in veneration of the mother on the feast day and it is all pomp and splendor on the said day.

I wish i could be here on the day and get some pictures to add to this review for everyone's sake....:)

Tuticorin is connected between Chennai by Air,Rail and Road which is about 600 kms
The flag mast is a main mast from …

Martin, a Roman legend has it that Mary appeared to one of the early popes in a dream and told him to build a church where it next snowed. A miraculous snowfall appeared in the middle of summer and he promptly built it at that site, the Basilica of Mary Maggiore. Maybe there is a similar legend behind this church for the Lady of Snows?
