God is in the details Apr 25, 2016
N48°12.929' E16°23.164' this privately run hotel by owners Annelie and Jack Pastuszyn in the Leopoldstadt neighbourhood of Vienna has been renovated in 2013. This was not only a very tasteful interior job, but also a total makeover of the hotel concept from presentation to experience. Looking at colours, Vienna tales on the walls, staff members photographed in their favourite Vienna spot, artworks and business correspondents, the result is very creative and only the best designer hotels can match, although the reception is unimpressive. If you make your booking directly on their website or by email, always cheaper to leave out the intermediary, you will receive a small but nice gift.

The hotel is outside but a short 10-minute walk from the Vieanna Innerstadt. At Vienna Airport, we took the inexpensive S7 that directly connects to Praternstern station. From there take the U1 for one stop to Nestroyplatz. The hotel is at the station exit.

Our room 411 "Wienzeilen" in March 2016 was one of the bigger rooms in the hotel. We paid €456 for 4 nights. It overlooked the street, but the street noise was no problem with the window open. The room was equipped with television, coffee maker, desk, fridge, hairdryer and save. The air conditioner unit had a life on its own and switched on automatically, heating our room to 23° Celsius. Wi-Fi was good but during streaming, it dropped the signal too many times. Strangely, the supplied passwords were not needed to log in. The shower was excellent, but the bathtub slippery. No handrail to hold.

In Germany and Austria, double beds are usually equipped with two single person duvets. We requested one large double duvet. The hotel went to great lengths to supply the double duvet. Excellent service and staff members went into overdrive when house keeping forgot to clean our room. The bed slept a bit firm.

Breakfast is on the second floor in four dining room. It got busy around 9am, queuing in line for an extensive breakfast buffet from cereal to cooked with nice Kaiserbrothens cheese, ham and marmalade in between. We finished with coffee and Viennese cake. Impressive breakfast all together.

Das Capri is a good alternative to expensive Innerstadt hotels. It offers modern rooms and an excellent breakfast on a short walk from the centre of Vienna. If Das Capri can manage the small details, like unruly air conditioner, slippery bathtub, unneeded Wi-Fi-passwords and forgotten cleaning, it can become an excellent hotel.
