As the 'The Gateway to Tees Valley', the town of Darlington is in County Durham in the North East of England.

Darlington is close to The Pennines and Cleveland Hills, the North York Moors are also within easy reach of the town. Both the River Tees and River Skerne pass through the town. The town has a 91 acre idyllic South Park, which has recently been restored to its former Victorian splendour. Within the parks are ancient giant redwood trees, a bandstand and tranquil lake. Right in the heart of town the park's award-winning floral displays, rose garden, sensory garden, aviaries and play areas.

Darlington is known for its associations with the birth of railways. This is celebrated in the town at Darlington Railway Centre and Museum. The world's first passenger rail journey was between Shildon (via Darlington) and nearby Stockton-on-Tees on the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.

The town is home to the football team Darlington F.C., known as The Quakers because of the contributions made to the town by men such as Edward and Joseph Pease, members of the Religious Society of Friends.
