Dar Jamai Museum Meknes Reviews
Great palace Nov 18, 2010
The Dar Jamai museum is a wonderful palace to visit in the heart of the medina of Meknes. The entrance fee is just 10 dirhams, which is a very cheap price considering the historic worth of the place.
The palace retains many original features, and where required, some parts have been faithfully restored. The tiles and the stonework are amazing, and there are quite a few exhibitions which show clothing, jewellery and other artefacts from the eighteenth-nineteenth century. I particularly enjoyed seeing the harem; the cushions are décor were just sumptuous and it was a wonderful way of imagining how king lived with his four wives. The gardens outside are also lovely, and features a little shaded spot where musicians and entertainers used to sit.
I particularly recommend a guide if one is available. You will have to tip him 10-20 dirhams extra per person, but the extra information and the unprecedented access to the palace is worth it in my opinion.
Although the city of Meknes is a UNECSCO heritage site, it is hard for many sites to be considered the crème de la crème. Enchanting and exciting, this palace is one of those rare exceptions.
