9 Three Roman legions is destroyed in the Teutenberg Forrest

Fact about the battle in the Teutenberg Forrest: “Not much is known for certain about the battle in the Teutenberg Forrest - the location is uncertain the number of Germanic warriors is unknown. What is known is the Roman forced was annihilated and the Romans never again tried to conquer the wild lands north of the river Rhine. The consequences of the battle can be seen in Europe till this day. There is a significant cultural divide going through the continent along the old border of the Roman Empire. South of the border you speak Latin languages - north you speak Germanic languages. South of the border you drink wine - north you drink beer. Hence this battle might be the single most important battle in determining the later European history.”

Dany House is a small privately run hostel in the outskirts of the old town of Firenze - but it is still easy walking distance from all the sights in the centre of Florence. Dany House is located in an apartment on the first floor which used to be owned by the managers grandmother Daniela - hence the hostel is named after her. The hostel is walking distance from the train station - or you can take a bus which should stop close by the hostel. Danny House is located in number 8 - but due to the strange numbering of the houses on the street I had some trouble finding the place when I walk there from the station. I got to number 6 - and I kind of expected number 8 to be right next to number 6 - that is sort of the way you do numbering of the streets back where I live. But for some reason this is not the same principal they use in Florence. Right next to number 6 you have number 10 followed by number 12. By now I was confused and walk back thinking I had missed number 8 all together - but no I had missed number 8 it wasn’t there. So I walk back got to number 12 again - and strangely just after number twelve you have number 8 - right where you would expect number 14.

The owner is talkative and will do his best to make his guest feel at home at his place. in doing so he have made it a tradition to serve some of his grandfathers Tuscan wine and chips every evening at nine - since I went during the Christmas holiday period there was some (possible traditional Tuscan?) Christmas cake as well. And since it is his grandfather’s wine he seems to have adequate quantities available for his guest at any given time - which came in pretty handy when his hostel was the starting spot for the New Year eve of his guest.

There are also breakfast included in the morning - the breakfast is very Italian style breakfast so it didn’t really live up to the evening wine and crisp. There are free wifi and a computer available in the common room for the guest to use.

Friendliest place in Florence Nov 16, 2011
I have never had such a welcoming and friendly hostel landlord, Jonothan provided us with helpful tips and advice for Florence and gathered the whole hostel every night for "liiiiitle party" around the dining table with local wine and snacks. I would 100% go back and definitely recommend this hostel!

Great deal in Florence Feb 08, 2010
We were in Florence on a very tight budget and spent hours looking for a place to stay. Nothing was in our price range (less than 15 euro) except one hostel which we couldn't stay in because of a gas leak. As the night wore on, we eventually found the Dany House, and were shocked at what we saw.

The hostel is about a 20 minute walk north of the Duomo, which by my standards is a great location for the price. We ended up staying for only 9.5 euro a night in a 12 bed dorm room. The 12 of us had to share a bathroom, which was a minor inconvenience at times. For a few euro more, you can get a 6 bed room insuite.

The hostel has no wifi but a computer for internet access. There was also a big tv that we could (and did) watch movies on. Breakfast is provided, which consisted of eggs, bread, jams/jellies, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and whatever else the owner decided to set out. Dinner was not mentioned to be included but the owner brought out pizza and sandwiches just about every night we were there (8 nights, and the number of days we were there did not affect the price).

The hostel can only host 24 people, so it has a homey feel. The onwers are there every night and are great people to get to know. Dany (the owner's wife) treated us like children and helped cook our meals in true Italian fashion. She turned 1 euro pasta into something delicious!

The only big drawback for me was that the owners liked to smoke.

All in all, this is a great hostel with a very homey feel and we were well taken care of. Even if I had more money, I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
