Quality hostel Jul 14, 2014
The last couple of nights we were spending in Copenhagen. As accommodation prices here are quite high, we decided to try out one of the quality hostels with its competitive prices.

Danhostel Copenhagen Amager belongs to well-known Danish chain of hostels priding themselves in a good quality accommodation offered for affordable prices. And indeed, it does compete with other places not only in terms of the price, but also the service and the facilities available.

The hostel is one of the two situated in the city - one being in the city itself, and the other one located in Amagerfælled Park 4km away from the centre. Our booking was made for the one set away from crowded and busy Copenhagen’s centrum. Additional advantage here was also free parking for the duration of our stay. All we needed to do was to request a permit during check-in.

The hostel lies in the peaceful area of southern Copenhagen and is connected to the centrum by a metro line reachable from the hostel within 5-7 minutes walking distance. There are also bus lines linking to the city centrum, but we did not use any of those. Our transportation was done only by the metro which runs regularly till fairly late hours – one-way trip into the city takes on average 25 minutes.

The only problem we found was lack of restaurants in the area, and the ones we found closed really early in the evening. So if you wish to dine out, we must be prepared to travel into the city.

On the approach, the hostel looks very impressive – it stretches far and has lots of green around it. It is for sure the biggest hostel I’ve stayed at so far. It has also appropriate amount of parking available to supply for the demand of its guests. We found a parking spot within a minute from entering the property and it was right by the entry door.

Once parked, we headed inside to check-in into our room. The size of the inside was notable – wide and open space of the entry hall and the reception area seemed much needed for the amount of guests walking about. Conveniently, the reception is open 24/7 so there is never an issue in case of late arrival or early departure. At the time of our arrival there was no queue there thus we got all our paperwork done within just few minutes. We received our bad linen, chargeable separately, and were ready to discover where the room was.

The hostel has several wings, but fortunately they are well marked so it is easy to find your way around the place. Having rented only a small room for two, we settled for a bunk bed. The room itself was long and narrow, but there was still enough room to keep all the baggage and walk around comfortably. The room was equipped with a small cabinet and a table with two chairs. Big-sized window overlooked green back yard and provided lots of natural light.

The hostel has separate ladies and gents showers and toilets. Ours were just few steps away from the room. I am not sure how many rooms use each of the facilities, but I never had to wait to have a shower, to wash my face/hands or to use the toilet. I guess these must be regularly maintained as they always look clean.

The hostel has an immense kitchen where anyone can prepare and cook their meals. Food storage cupboards and fridges are always accessible, and the kitchen is equipped with various pots, pans, utensils, crockery and cutlery. Some of it must be ‘hired’ from the reception, but there is no charge for it.

Right next to the kitchen is the dining room with snacks and drinks vending machines. The area always seems busy and vibrant with guests.

The hostel provides breakfast facility which we did not try due to the fact, that we were traveling with our own food supplies. We have looked at the breakfast dining area which looked very capacious.

Additional facilities offered by the hostel include upstairs quiet lounge area, laundry service, ironing facilities, luggage storage lockers and ticket purchase facilities (at the reception).

Wi-Fi is obviously available at this location and is free of charge.

Our 2-night stay at this facility cost us around €110 which was considerably cheaper than at other locations in Copenhagen.

This is a great place to stay provided that you are not looking for a luxury accommodation, but something a little more pocket-friendly.
