Located near the city of Navsari and on the fringes of the Arabian sea, the small village of Dandi is well off the tourist path. Which is surprising, as it has a major claim to fame in the development of modern India.
When Mahatma Gandhi was protesting about the high taxes on salt during his march in 1930, he set off from Ahmedabad and end the march in Dandi. A modest memorial site is located in Dandi to commemorate this. In recent years, Sonia Gandhi paid a visit here, and completed part of the famous walk undertaken by Mahatma.
Dandi is also known for its beach. Many of the locals come here during the evenings and weekends. Amongst the camel rides and snack sellers, it is possible just to enjoy the views from here.
