Dana Point Overview

Dana Point is a city in Orange county, California, popular for its nice coastline and harbor. Dana Point is home to roughly 36,000 residents and is located between San Juan Capistrano and Laguna Beach, CA. It is a nice weekend getaway place to relax.

It was named after Richard Henry Dana Jr. (1815-1882), a Harvard-trained lawyer, seaman, and author of the classic sea journal, Two Years Before the Mast (1840). Dana Point was originally called Bahia de San Juan Capistrano (Capistrano Bay). In his sea journal, Richard Dana Jr. described Capistrano Bay as "the most romantic spot on the California coast."

Dana Point has several yearly festivals. There is a tall ship festival, usually in September, which normally features the sailing of the Pilgrim. The Pilgrim is a replica of the ship that Richard Henry Dana sailed on. The other annual festival that is celebrated in Dana Point is the Festival of Whales. Many whales migrate to Mexico, passing the California coast along the way. The Festival of Whales is held in March, roughly half way through the migration season.
