A sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, this cave monastery, with its five sanctuaries, is the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist mural paintings (covering an area of 2,100 sq. m) are of particular importance, as are the 157 statues.

We got a bus from Kandy up to Dambulla. I think that it took a couple of hours. I can't remember much about the trip. It took us a while to find somewhere cheap to stay in Dambulla. In the end we found a couple of cheap guesthouses on the south side of town. One was trying to charge quite a lot for a really grotty room with lots of damp and mould on the wall, so we went to the other one.
