I’m taking a taxi from Amman to Damascus with the British engineer.  The rest of our little group of six have parted ways.  About 300 m from the border, the driver asks us to get out of the car.  He pops off the seat back revealing a hidden compartment into which he stuffs cartons of cigarettes to smuggle across the border.  He looks at me and touches his finger to his lips.  We get back in and cross the border without incident - no wonder the fare was so cheap…

We're leaving ... And leaving behind the many pleasures of the region: freshly squeezed juices of oranges, blood-oranges and grapefruit, right in front of your eyes lots of nuts like pistachios sold cheaply by the bagful or in cakes, dessserts and cookies the souks or markets ... Aleppo's is most authentic (truly working market) but Damascus' is more glitzy the hammams or Turkish Baths ... I certainly needed the exfoliation and pumelling back into shape. And the contrasts: Bedo…

The Arabic Bath
posted by:
Jun 05, 2008 - Aug 03, 2008
Today we went to an Arabic bath (essentially a Turkish bath but since it is in Syria it's Arabic?)We walked in and they told us to take off our clothes and change into towels. They gave us plastic bowls with shampoo, a bar of soap, and some sort of clump of strings used for scrubbing. The bath had several large rooms with stone bowls close to the ground, each one with two faucets, -- very hot and very cold. The entire bath area was filled with steam and you could barely see a few feet in front…

in the airport

So the airport is the most confusing thing ever.. its like being in one of those movies where everyone is trying to get through the one gate that will allow you to exit <insert third world country here> after some horrible disaster.  The drive from the bus station to here via taxi was one of the most harrowing experiences of my waking life.  Try to imagine a 3 lane highway, with, well, no lane lines and even if they did, nobody would pay any attention at all to them.  Peo…

In Damascus I get yet another indication this part of the world is semi instable. I had thought about making a trip to Lebanon before I left home, but the situation in Lebanon were shaky at best. No I am told the roads are block and there is no way to get to Beirut or anywhere else in Lebanon. Hence my plans are changed after a quick stop in Damascus it is on to Jordan.   It is Friday back home it is the day to go out and get a couple of beers and has fun. It is also an …

I am going to where dreams takes me. To the place where I have my inner peace, and at the same time my motivating rage... Heading to the street of an old city. To inhale inspiration that smells like Jasmin. Checking whether sunrise is still chanted, whether nights are as always celebrated, and days like never ending siestas.

The city of Damascus is like visiting the Bible. It is authentic, raw and welcoming. The streets are paved with history. This is the only city I have been to that does not have a Starbucks or a Coke sign!!! Come here before it changes!! I am staying at the Four Seasons Hotel in Damascus which is the first hotel to open for over 20 years in the city. More to come ........ When you plan to come to Damascus you will need a visa. Ask the Four Seasons Concierge to arrange this for you and for a …
