Daly City is named for John Daly who was amongst the first to establish dairy farming in this area. Some early settlers established homes and businesses along the Union Pacific railroad tracks as early as the 1860's. However, the community was first developed after the April 18,1906 San Francisco earthquake that forced people to seek refuge here after their homes and businesses were destroyed.
Seismologists believe that Daly City was the epicenter of the 1906 earthquake as well as the March 22, 1957 earthquake that registered 5.3 on the Richter scale.
The BART officially linked Daly City to San Francisco and the rest of the Bay area via high speed rail in September 1972.
