YD3 - The main Dales Oct 30, 2010
Obviously the rivers of the Dales have to get either to the west or the east to reach the sea. However there are four major ones flowing from north to south through the Dales area. These are, from west to east Ribble, Aire, Wharfe and Nidd.

The Dales to the West run throgh limestone and have the general name of the Craven Dales, whereas in other parts millstone grit is the predominant stone, sometimes in close proximity to limestone.

The two actually flowing from east to west are the Swale and the Ure, which flows through Wensleydale.
