Dalden (or Dalton) Tower Mar 18, 2017
Not much remains of this fortified medieval mansion which is now called Dalton Tower or Dalden Tower. Only some walls are still standing and beside one Gothic niche, no details are visible. Indeed, you need quite a lot of fantasy to imagine how the house once looked like. Dalton Tower was built around 1375 for the Dalden family but abandoned most probably around the year 1600 when it has been owned by the Bowes for almost two centuries. Excavations took place in the 1960s and 1980s. Unfortunately, the place has become quite popular with the local youth to hang out in the night, empty beer cans and broken bottles are a good evidence (Fosters seems to be quite popular here...). Go here only if you really like medieval ruins, like walks along country roads or if you have some extra time in the area. The Dalton name also still survives in the nearby village called Dalton-le-Dale, Dalden is the anglicized name.

Those deeply interested in the history of the building can find a good description over here: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1020292
