Delicious Chinese dumplings...and much more! Jan 30, 2017
Prior to visiting Sydney in November 2015, we searched through the Groupon and Living Social websites to look for any attractive (and money-saving) restaurant offers.

One of the vouchers that we chose to purchase was a Groupon voucher for Dainty Dumpling House. It entitled us to 5 courses with steamed rice and a pot of Chinese tea for 2 people and cost 49 AUD. At the prevailing exchange rate, that equated to around £24 - or £12 per person - which looked to be excellent value for money.

There are 3 branches of Dainty Dumpling House in Sydney at the time of writing. This review relates to the Haymarket branch, located close to Paddy’s Markets and Chinatown.

We were really impressed with the restaurant’s decor - with mock bamboo shuttered windows and ornate Chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling.

Our voucher entitled us to the special Groupon menu. 2 of the courses were set, while the other 3 courses offered various choices. I will list the courses in the order that they appeared on the menu, but in reality the first 4 courses were all brought out simultaneously in addition to a bowl of steamed rice each.

Course 1: Xiao Long Bao

Course 1 consisted of 3 options:

Xiao Long Bao

Pan-Fried Pork and Chive Dumplings

Vegetarian Spring Rolls

We opted for Xiao Long Bao; 8 delicious Shanghai-style dumplings filled with minced pork and a hot meaty broth.

Course 2: Roasted Duck with Lotus Bun

This was a mandatory course. We each received a slightly sweet steamed lotus bun filled with plenty of tender duck, cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce. Very nice!

Course 3: Peking-Style Stir Fried Pork with Pancakes

There were 3 options for this course:

Peking-Style Stir Fried Pork with Pancakes

Crispy Chicken with Shangdong Sauce

Stir Fried Beef with Black Pepper Sauce

We opted for the Peking-style pork; delicious shredded pork in a sticky sauce, served with 6 pancakes. Lovely!

Course 4: Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables with Black Fungus

Again, there were 3 options for this course:

Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables with Black Fungus

Braised Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce

Stir Fried Bean Sprouts with Mushrooms

We opted for the stir fried mixed vegetables (broccoli, Chinese lettuce, spring onions, bean sprouts, carrots) and black fungus; all steamed and served in a garlic sauce.

Course 5: Red Bean Pancake with Green Tea Ice Cream

There were no choices for dessert - but that was ok as the offered dessert was delicious! We shared a plate of red bean pancakes and green tea ice cream; warm pancakes folded and filled with a hot red bean paste. It was a nice contrast of flavours.

The shared pot of Chinese tea was of a sufficient size that we didn’t need to order any further drinks.

Dainty Dumpling House provided a nice intimate setting, delicious food and generous portion sizes. The Groupon offer that we purchased was incredibly good value for money.

Delicious dumplings and more! Highly recommended - especially if you have the opportunity to purchase a Groupon offer!
