The Beautiful Way to Hue

It took to me a long time to learn and accept the fact that Hue is pronounced "way". Once I did, it opened up a whole world of lame rhymes and puns that provided unlimited entertainment for me. The drive from Hoi An to Hue was unexpectedly amazing. We left after breakfast and passed through these great sandy villages before reaching the coast. We stopped at the Marble Mountains near the city of Danang. We parked and had to pay a small entrance fee before walking up hundreds of steps to get to ...

Da Nang, Vietnam October 2006: Da Nang Travel Photos
posted by:

The stay in Da Nang was one of rest and relaxation. My friends and I spent our days there at a resort on China Beach. It was a five-star hotel but with my connections, paid the equilvalent of a two-star. We did a day trip to Hoi An and to Marble Mountain. The rest of the time was spent soaking up the rays of the sun on the white sand beach.

Its hard to put into words my feelings about Vietnam. I leave with mixed emotions about a country with a rich heritage and tremendous potential. I had some truly amazing experiences, but my lasting impressions will be of a people that put money above all else... (ie China) In order to get a real feel for Vietnam, you MUST get off the Lonely Planet path. Its a watered-down experience to be honest. You're treated like a walking wallet. Get away from that scene and you'll see Vietnam...

An amazing trip. I highly recommend people to travel to Vietnam. Great place to visit and the people are very generous and not very pushy. If you like coffee, they have their own, great food too.

Da Nang and Hoi An

I spent the second day with the same guide but this time in Da Nang and Hoi An. Da Nang can be reached from Hue by way of the new German tunnel and is the home of Marble Mountain. At the base of which are many marble factories, the largest of which I bought some carved lanterns. Wow the detail and craftsmanship is amazing. On the top of Marble Mountain is a pagoda and hidden temple in the caves. My guide could walk through the caves no problem, but I was constantly ducking to avoiding banging...

An amazing experience! My first time being back after 15 years... it was more than a traveling experience, but rather a personal one. I've learned so much about myself, my own history and culture and have come to love the people as if they were my family.

Arrival in Da Nang
posted by:
Jan 25, 2008 - Jul 09, 2008
After the long journey back I decided to unwind with a massage.  I did not pick a good place, and we'll leave it at that.  Da Nang at night is somewhat dead, or maybe I was out of the loop, but I met up with some other expats and ended up at the same two bars I had been at two days prior.  As I was walking back though the empty streets (due to the holiday the next day) of Da Nang at about 11:30, I thought I may have had to walk all the way back to my hotel, which was a good 3 o...
