South Indian flavour meets San Francisco chic Aug 18, 2013
"Dosa", an Indian homage to crepes... or are crepes the western homage to the dosa? Either way, dosas are to South Indians what naan is to the North Indians, and has, over the years epitomised what South Indian cuisine is really all about. And what started out as a humble masala dosa with potato/onion filling inside has, like pizza transformed into a variety of stuffings inside.

Having visited SF and having lived on non-spicy food for days, we were in the mood for some spicy Indian food. But as is the wont of most Bay Area Indians, we wanted to avoid the standard restaurants in the South Bay and focus on something in SF downtown. A friend of ours had recommended this place - if nothing, it sounded interesting!

Apparently Dosa is run by American management. Unique - check! When was the last time an Indian rsnt in the US wasn't run by someone from the Indian sub continent?! And apparently it's done so well they opened up 2 branches in downtown itself. Mmmmm....

Driving from Golden Gate to this place was a bit intimidating - typical of SF, lots of roads going up and then going down...too hilly for someone who's used to driving flat TX and WA roads. But the visit was SO worth it.

The restaurant has a very holiday resort lounge feel. Huge, and I mean huuuuuuuge ceilings. A very spacious bar area, couch seats like Starbucks, and then there's the main dining hall. Very professional hosts - you're ushered in, seated and promptly handed the menu.

The menu looked very authentic. But what caught my eye were the drinks. I just had to have the tantalisingly titled Bloody Mary Curry - that's Bloody Mary with green chillies and curry leaves. It was absolutely YUM. I've never had something so spicy yet sophisticated in my life. I felt like James Bond in a Bollywood movie!

For the main course, I decided to go a spicy uttappa - think thick dosa-pancake with 3 types of chilli. I was warned this would be spicy!

The cons of this restaurant - they do take a while to bring out the orders. But once it came out, it was magnificently made. Perfectly cooked, perfectly arranged and the chutneys and sambar they serve with the dosa were impeccable.

I rounded up my meal with some ginger chai.... again, amazing stuff (albeit not really hot).

I can't say enough good things about this hotel. It's bright, it's vibrant, it's hip and happening, good quality food and most of all, a very spacious atmospheric feeling - conducive to any kind of rendezvous - family dinners, birthday dinners, buddies' get together.... it's really made for all.
