Cypriot History Oct 07, 2017
The strategic location of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean means that it has always been influenced by the diverse cultures that surround the Island. Thos e of the Aegean Region and the Near East as well as Anatolia and Egypt.

Cyprus became a melting pot of all these cultures but also managed to establish it's own distinct cultural Identity.

Founded in 1888 as a privately run institution to protect the finds that started to come to light during the first legal excavations undertaken during the British rule of the island. A committee, chaired by the British governor, undertook the direction of the museum.

The continuously growing number of finds from systematic excavations which were mainly undertaken by foreign missions, such as the Swedish Archaeological School mission directed by professor Einar Gjerstad, forced the museum's committee to look for new premises for the exhibition and the storage of the finds. Currently on display is a large collection of finds from years of Polish field work on the island. From prehistoric times to the early Christian period.

Extensive excavations throughout the island have enriched the collections of the museum considerably and brought Cypriot archaeology to the fore front of international archaeological research. Here the cultural heritage of Cyprus, such as pottery, jewelry, sculpture and coins from the Neolithic period to the Bronze Age, Iron Age and the Greco-Roman period, is cherished and displayed to enjoy. Star exhibits include the statue of Aphrodite of Soloi, a gold jewelery collection and relics from the royal tombs of Salamis.

As is the case with many countries in the region the real jewels of Cypriot culture are housed in museums in New York,London,Paris and Berlin but what is left is still worth a visit. More excavations are ongoing and hopefully the finds from those sites will stay on the Island.

In an older building just outside the old city in Lefkosia is the Cyprus Museum. It is supposedly the best museum in all of Cyprus covering the ancient history of Cyprus. In the vast exhibition are some artifacts from all the different ancient sights around Cyprus. When you actually go around the island you are likely to see some picture of the artifacts in the museum because there are no artifacts at the archeological they are all abroad or at the Cyprus Museum.

The museum is covering all of the old history of Cyprus from the Neolithic days with a few exhibits from 10.000 years BC then the museum is quickly moving forward to the later day with Hellenistic arts in the form of several amphora’s and other pottery from the time of the Greeks. The exhibitions stop with the Roman era hence the modern times is not covered at this museum and for those wanting to know more about the days of the Crusaders, Venetians or Ottomans there is not a lot to come for.
