In an older building just outside the old city in Lefkosia is the Cyprus Museum. It is supposedly the best museum in all of Cyprus covering the ancient history of Cyprus. In the vast exhibition are some artifacts from all the different ancient sights around Cyprus. When you actually go around the island you are likely to see some picture of the artifacts in the museum because there are no artifacts at the archeological they are all abroad or at the Cyprus Museum.
The museum is covering all of the old history of Cyprus from the Neolithic days with a few exhibits from 10.000 years BC then the museum is quickly moving forward to the later day with Hellenistic arts in the form of several amphora’s and other pottery from the time of the Greeks. The exhibitions stop with the Roman era hence the modern times is not covered at this museum and for those wanting to know more about the days of the Crusaders, Venetians or Ottomans there is not a lot to come for. Today was my day to go to South Nicosia in Cyprus and North Lefkosia in The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It is technically a separate country with its own border and flag, although its existence is contested. It is only officially recognized…Museum and the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia . It was almost 15:00 and I needed to leave by 16:30 . This was now going to be a problem.
I found more than I thought there would be, of interest. I had enjoyed my discoveries… A tale of two capitols (Nicosia, Republic of Cyprus & Lefkosia, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) |

Na hier wat rond gekeken te hebben gingen we door naar Lefkosia (= Nicosia) waar we eerst een bezoek brachten aan de kathedraal die naast het aartsbisschoppelijk paleis staat. Dit is geen groot gebouw zoals je van e…Cyprus museum. Een museum vol met archeologische vondsten die hier op het eiland zijn gedaan gerangschikt naar historische periode.
Na dit museum werden we weer “losgelaten” in de Lidrasstraat. Dit is dé winkelstraat van Lefkosia en hier hebben we in groepjes een restaurantje opgezocht om wat te eten… Stadsbezoek Lefkosia (= Nicosia) // Visiting the city Lefkosia (= Nicosia) |
