Pure delight Feb 22, 2009
The festival of Cwarmé in Malmedy has been going on for at least 500 years, on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday every year. It is simply delightful, a pure expression of the community, a fusion between French, Walloon and German culture. In this parade everyone is drawn into the fun and takes part in the festivities. The main characters are the fifteen "costumes", different personalities that the 2,500 participants take on. The Haguète trap bystanders with their hape-tchâr, le Long-Né imitate victims in rows of six, le Longès-Brèsses steal people's hats, there are fox tails, pigs' bladders and dried herring flying around the place while le Boldjji paddle women's bottoms and le Pièrot threw blood oranges into the crowd. I have never been in such an atmosphere of pure carnival.
