Just who is this celebration for?

Many people have remarked to me that I must be brave to have set off on this trip around the world.  However, I feel it requires a lot more bravery to return and start over.  When I first get home, I´ll be happy to see everyone, and they´ll be happy to see me, but eventually, my family and friends will go back to their lives and I will be left to rebuild one.  It is that transition that I dread the most.  I knew this day would come eventually, but it seems just like yest...

Finally sleeping in a confortable bett. Nobody waking you up at 5am! Taking a great warm shower and as much time as you want... So good! ;) After having a delicious breakfast, Matt & me went to downtown. Today would be our last day in Cusco. So we wanted to explore the city. We haven´t done it properly. We were also missing Sacsayhuaman and other near Remains. We started walking around the main square - which I love :) - and suddenly recognized 3 people walking across us. Hey! Our Du...

Cusco, Peru -› Pisac, Peru -› ...
We had a free day in Cusco upon our return from Machu Picchu and I decided to explore as much as I could.  Being a teacher, I was anxious to see several museums and their treasures.  Some places allowed pictures, other prohibited them.  I would have liked to sneak a picture of some of the Inca mummies but never got a chance.  Too many police and closed circuit TV.  The artifacts photos at the bottom of the page were taken at the Pre-Columbian Museu...

the inca trail

best train ride ever! since walking the inca trail in reverse might be fun after arriving at machu picchu, a train ride from aguas calientes back to our bus in ollantaytambo sounded like a better idea. we took the 'tourist train' and nobody would have expected what kind of onboard entertainment was included this time... they really don't like boring bus or train rides in south america :) 5 minutes after leaving strange electronic sounds appeared and the porter who just minutes b...

Tambomachay

Lima, Peru -› Chinchero, Peru -› ...
The archaeological site of Tambomachay is located just 8 km (15 minutes) to the northeast of Cusco and at 1 km of Puca-pucará fortress. Apparently, it was one of the favorite resting-places of the Incas, used as a resting watering place and, at the same time, it was one of the pillars of the defense system of the Valley of Cusco.   Its name derives from two Quechua words: Tampu, which means collective lodging; and Mach'ay, which means resting-place and the archeological site is compo...

oh my God! who hasn't heard about Cusco? This city is just magic! Always full of people all over the world. It might be a small city compared to the big ones (even Lima), but it's so alive and you can feel a sort of energy over there. Every time I go to Cusco, I find something new and interesting. You can see things from the Inca time, the Colonial time ... just WONDERFUL!!! Of course doing the Inca Trail is THE Experience

Thoughts and Experiences in Cusco

First thing. Taxis. Anywhere not withing walking distance, you're pretty much going to have to use them. But they're dirt cheap and fun to ride in. They ARE going to try to rip you off. They see white faces and see $$. So kinda be wary and ask more than one taxi how much it is to different places you're going. If they see you start to ask someone else, they're going to lower their price. From the airport to the main square (Plaza de Armas or PdA from here on out... ) pay no more than 5 soles....

My second day began with yet another frigid, frigid shower. I have yet to figure out the trick to hot water and can't handle more than a few splashes under that water! Holy gods, it makes your bones ache it is so cold. I went down to make breakfast, to be greeted by the brother of the owner, Julio. He is very shy and sweet, but intimidated by me since I tower over the poor man. However, he does show me he just returned from the market with fresh eggs and bread. A little kiss on the cheek and...

Lima, Peru -› Huancayo, Peru -› ...
The day after Macchu Picchu, we all had a free day in Cusco. I probably should have spent the day exploring the city's ruins and museums, but I was a little citied-out by then and decided to go white water rafting, which I'd never done before. So, on a sunny Tuesday morning I found myself on a minibus with Phil (funny English guy), Erik and Bastiaan (quirky Dutch father and his 15-year old son) - all part of the tour - and a bunch of young Spanish-speaking but Aryan-looking kids. I spent most...

Day 1 Woke up at 4.15am having packed the night before.  We decided to rent backpacks as ours weren't suitable for trekking and didn't want to ruin them! They were both quite heavy as we had to carry sleeping bags and water for the trek.  We were picked up from the hostel at 5.20am both feeling excited and very tired! We had to walk down the hill near the hostel and got on our coach at the bottom, there was only one other member of our new 'family' on it at thattime.  We the...
